Electricity Is Dirty! Always Use An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Posted on June 30, 2009
Electricity from the outlet is dirty! Ideally, the electricity would come out of the wall at an exact voltage and an exact frequency. Technically it is possible to have clean power out of an outlet, but financially, most consumers (homes and businesses) just don?t want to pay that price, so power companies will not provide it. They don?t have to; vacuum cleaners, fans, air conditioners, TVs, printers and light bulbs work just fine with that dirty electricity. Computers, on the other hand, are much more finicky about their electricity needs. Some of the spikes or brownouts are just a tad too much. When that happens, the computer starts misbehaving: 1. it goes to sleep, 2. it shuts off instantly, 3. it corrupts a file or two, 4. it goes into hibernate, 5. it burns out an electronic component. The consequences may be noticeable right away or appear at a later date; the consequences are never good.
At home or at work, a computer should always be on a UPS. Laptops have their own ?UPS? and are excluded from this requirement; they have a battery built in.
A UPS is a battery pack that constantly monitors the electricity from the outlet. When the electricity from the outlet exceeds preset thresholds, such as too little power or too much power, the UPS kicks in and takes over.
Now, a surge protector is not the same thing as a UPS. A surge protector only protects from too high of a power from the outlet, such as surges or spikes. A UPS protects from too little power and too much power. This is important for a computer. A computer needs relatively clean power to function properly.
The return on investment, ROI, for a UPS is good. Just consider the hassle and price of corrupted files and you will realize that every computer must have a UPS and every server an even bigger one.
Since every computer has a different power consumption, it is hard to say which UPS is the right one for your computer or server. Typically you will find 300 to 700 Volt Ampere UPSs in the store. They have 300VA or something like that written on the box. It doesn?t matter which one you buy. The 700 VA UPS will last at least twice as long as the 300 VA UPS if the power fails. This could mean that your computer may keep running for 20 minutes rather than 10 minutes. Just realize that these UPSs you buy at the store are the cheap stuff; they are so-called standby-UPSs. If the power from the outlet becomes too dirty, a little switch will switch over to battery power. Some computer power supplies or motherboards can?t even handle the 5 milliseconds of no power when the switch activates. For people with such finicky computers it is better to go to the website of the UPS manufacturer and look for a so-called continuous UPS. These UPSs are more expensive, but the computer is always feeding from the battery and the outlet is just constantly recharging the battery.
Server rooms and any high availability hardware should always run off a continuous UPS.
Oh, never plug a laser printer into a UPS. The fuser, a component that fuses the toner onto the paper, needs so much power at once that it overburdens a UPS. Always plug a laser printer directly into the outlet of the wall.

Importance of Destroying Sensitive Information
Posted on June 29, 2009
Computers crimes are everywhere these days, there are entire divisions of law enforcement teams devoted to working on crimes that, in one way or another are linked to the use of a computer.
The root of many of the crimes perpetrated through the use of a computer stem from the fact that the highly sensitive information present on many personal and business computers isn?t disposed of properly. You may not realize it, because it may not really seem like a big deal at the time, but you have tons of highly sensitive information stored on your personal hard drive - and if you operate a business you may have many other people?s (your customers) highly sensitive information on there as well.
You could have: full names, social security numbers, complete addresses, accounts numbers (including bank and credit card). If you are getting rid of an old hard drive, even though you think you may have gone through every step to properly ensure that this sensitive information has been erased, it could still be present for anyone with even basic knowledge of computers to bring back and have full view of. Even if you have a good deal of computer knowledge and you make every effort to wipe a hard drive clean, there is no guarantee that an experienced computer programmer or hacker couldn?t easily resurrect the sensitive information and do whatever they wanted with it.
Whether it?s a business or personal computer, if the sensitive information that is present on the hard drive gets into the wrong hands it could be incredibly damaging to the computer owner. PC?s that are “breached” once disposed of can very easily lead to a nasty case of identity theft that is very hard to track - the offender may literally have access to every single bit of personal identity they need to effectively steal the former PC owners identity. For those of you who?ve never been a victim of identity theft, rest assured it?s not a very pleasant experience and can affect your credit for a very long time as the investigation is held and the details sorted out.
For business computers the scenario can be equally as bad, a business customer?s private information can be made public. This can be damaging to the business? customers by having their sensitive information go out to the public and it can cause a wide rift created by distrust towards the company who let the information get out. One situation like this that isn?t swiftly and efficiently handled can spell almost instant doom for a business.
It you don?t want the potential disaster of highly sensitive information getting into the wrong hands, then it?s imperative that the information be completely wiped away from the hard drive. The only one way to one guarantee that the information is completely destroyed is to use a hard disk crusher.
For a home PC, there are services available that you can enlist that will use the hard disk crusher on your system to remove all of the sensitive data before you dispose of the hard drive, or you can rent one from a service and perform the job yourself. For businesses who will be getting entirely new office equipment and have a multitude of machines that need to be “crushed”, there are companies that lease or sell hard drive crushers that you will then have access to forever, or as long as you may need it.
If things continue to go the way they are going, it may not be long before crimes stemming from information found on computer hard drives comprise the bulk of the crimes committed in the US. Don?t let yourself fall prey to this type of situation, before you dispose of any hard drive - use a hard disk crusher to clean all of the sensitive information off of it.

Annotations Have the Last Word: Adobe Reader PDF Makes Mac OS Vulnerable
Posted on June 29, 2009
You could be getting more than you bargained for when you download a PDF or receive one as an email attachment. PDFs can run scripts upon opening them and could potentially compromise your system.
Adobe Systems Inc. confirmed the existence of two new vulnerabilities in their Adobe Acrobat Reader application. The news was announced May 4 by Trustwave and other security agencies which stated that Adobe expects to release patches by May 12, 2009. The vulnerabilities involve JavaScript functions that ?getAnnots ()? (CVE-2009-1492) and spell.customDictionaryOpen (CVE-2009-1493). According to Secunia.com the ?getAnnots ()? function is a JavaScript API in Acrobat Reader and Acrobat that allows remote assault to cause a denial of service through memory corruption or execute an arbitrary code via a PDF that contains that annotation. This is conducted through an OpenAction entry using JavaScript code that issues a series of crafted integer arguments or calls.
The customDictionaryOpen spell method is also a JavaScript API that affects Adobe Reader 8.x ? 9.1 running primarily on Linux System. It allows remote hackers to deny services through a memory corruption and, similar to the ?getAnnots?, may be executed through an arbitrary code via a PDF. Mac users don?t have to be too concerned about the customDictionaryOpen function as this is mainly something that will come up using Linux. The most troubling out of the two is the ?getAnnots ()?.
These vulnerabilities cause a Macintosh-based Acrobat Reader versions 9.x ? 8.x and Acrobat 9.x ? 8.x to crash and have the potential to allow a hacker to attack and take control of a vulnerable system. Simply disabling JavaScript will not resolve anything; it only disables the vulnerable JavaScript component but does not reduce system compromise. The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has recommended the following precautions for those that have or yet to encounter these PDFs.
Do not open unsolicited PDF files from distrusted or suspicious sources; switch your default PDF handler to Preview for the time being; and disable Adobe Reader JavaScript Preferences to prevent hackers from exploiting system vulnerabilities. To do this:
(1) Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader
(2) Select Edit from the Menu Bar
(3) Select Preferences
(4) Select the Internet Tab
(5) Uncheck the ?Display PDF in Browser?
In addition, prevent your default browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) from automatically opening PDF documents. The installer that loads Adobe Reader and Acrobat configures any one of your browsers to open a PDF file without any user interaction. To disable the browser from displaying of PDF documents:
(1) Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader
(2) From the main Menu select Edit
(3) Select Preferences, Click on the Internet tab
(4) Uncheck ?Display PDF in browser? checkbox.
Avoiding opening PDF documents in a web browser reduces the possibility of attack. The following workaround applied to the updated version of Adobe Reader should protect against future vulnerabilities.
If you have a PC, additional preventative measures are listed at the US-CERT site that further reduce your chances of attack. Currently Adobe recognizes this as a critical issue and recommends that you follow the above listed steps and exercise common sense when opening PDF files. Please visit the Adobe Product Security Incident Response Team blog for further updates on this issue.

Dangers of Locating at a Leased Data Center: Why Property Management is the New Blind Spot
Posted on June 29, 2009
Hosting your servers in a leased data center is one problem that most people don?t even consider when deciding on a colocation facility. But if you?re serious about finding a reliable provider, this is something you need to consider. When locating at a leased facility, there are a number of factors that are not within the provider?s control that can affect you and that you or your provider cannot do anything about.
First and foremost, a leased building is not in the control of data center provider. They are at the mercy of the landlord and are subject to his will. Factors that are out the company?s hands include power, infrastructure and building rights.
Power
Power is absolutely essential and data centers tend to use up a lot of it. From powering the servers and cooling systems to running 24-hour security and fire protection systems, data centers are infamous for using resources. But it?s not always the case that landlords allow companies to use an unlimited amount of power. Changes in the lease could prevent the facility from using the amount of power that they need. This could lead to increased power-outages or decreases in essential services such as cooling.
Physical Infrastructure
Another factor that most people don?t consider is the fact the physical building isn?t under the control of the company leasing the property. There are certain limitations imposed on the facility that are beyond their control. Even something as simple as installing additional cameras for security or an enhanced fire protection system may not be allowed by leasing the company. Limiting the ability for the data center to innovate with the changing times limits the quality of service you will receive as a customer. Not having the freedom to grow and change with times will ultimately leads to an outdated facility that is not able to meet your needs.
Building Rights
The right to lease a property is another concern that most people take for granted. Leases are not static and are subject to change. Rents raise and conditions are changed. Depending on these changes, the company may be forced to raise your monthly fees to meet the demands of increased rent on the unit. Or they may be forced to vacate the building altogether.
Even worse, the company could potential get evicted from the building for reasons they may or not be able to control. If this is the case, services could be shut down at moment?s notice, forcing you to find another provider at the drop of a dime. Not only is this a hassle, but it?s also terrible for business. Since these events are not within the company?s control, there is little to nothing they can do should the situation arise.
Host in an Owned Building
The best way to ensure that your data center is still around for years to come is to take a little preventative action. Find out if your facility owns the building they are located in. With ownership comes more control over the many factors that go into a well-run data center. Owning the building allows the facility to make the necessary improvements and changes it needs such as adding security features and fire protection. It also eliminates the worry that the company will be evicted from the premises, leaving you to find a new provider without notice.
All-in-all, hosting with a provider that owns their own property will give you a better overall experience and eliminate many concerns, worries and problems.

The Grassroots Movement Of Dual SIM Card Phones
Posted on June 28, 2009
The ability to operate 2 SIM cards on a single mobile phone has recently become available to consumers. While in the past it was necessary to carry two phones at all times for business and personal calls, cell phones are now available that can send and receive calls from both numbers simultaneously. Not only useful for those with a line dedicated to business calls, this technology is quite handy for those in frequent travel status. Rather than paying roaming charges or switching phones when crossing international borders, travelers can insert SIM cards from two countries into their mobile phone and switch between them. This saves travelers and businessmen a great deal of time, hassle, and pocket space. It is not hard to see why the popularity of dual SIM phones continues to grow.
However, the pioneers of this revolution are not who you would expect. In fact, very few of the prominent mobile phone manufacturers currently sell phones with this capability. Most of the unlocked, dual SIM mobile phones available today are from Chinese brands, such as CECT, Ming Xing, and JINCEN. These phones are available in numerous designs, from iPhone type models like the CECT i9 3G, to more standard cell phone models like the Ming Xing A008. The latest models are high caliber phones.
Some might ask to why China is a dominant manufacturer of Dual Sim Card mobile phones. Possibly that is due to high volume of electronics being manufactured in China and also due to fast adoption of new mobile technologies in China that local mobile phone manufacturers are more likely to develop new mobile phone features. Another reason could be that the mobile calling rates in China are much lower then other countries so mobile users can afford to have 2 or more mobile numbers.
Many of these Dual Sim Card mobile phones have gained huge popularity in many countries. For example, the Ming Xing A008 comes with MMS, SMS, WAP, and GPRS capabilities. It has an MP3 / MP4 player, web browser, FM radio, 1.3MP camera, and Bluetooth capability. The CECT i9 3G includes all of the same, along with a 3.2″ high-definition touch screen and 2.0MP camera. It also has a built-in gravity inductor which supports auto-horizontal video and picture display. These phones offer all the same features as their single SIM relatives, and include the flexibility of dual SIM operation. In addition, they can be purchased online from wholesale manufacturers for around $100.
So why have many big manufacturers not responded to this increasing demand? The reason is that they are under extreme pressure from mobile carriers around the world. The most popular service providers wield a great deal of power and influence over many big mobile phone manufacturers. As we all know, mobile service providers like to lock their users in for the long haul, attaching 1-2 year contracts to most of the handsets they sell. Similarly, they are not eager to have manufacturers produce phones that are compatible with other carriers. Consumers looking for unlocked dual SIM phones will have to look elsewhere, at least for the time being.

The Green Difference: Print Optimization
Posted on June 28, 2009
These days, both the financial and environmental costs of printing are enormous. Companies spend an average of 1 to 3 percent of their revenue on print related costs. One office employee on average prints 10,000 pages of paper per year, which is equal to one whole tree. The average total cost of a printed page is between 6 and 13 cents and each office employee can cost between $150 and $200 in consumables alone. When you apply these figures to every major company doing business and to every office worker at each one of those companies, the totals are astounding.
But what is a company supposed to do and how can they better manage these costs? Effective internal communication and correspondence with customers is essential to the way business is done. Even if you move all of the documents you can to an electronic format, which is a good first step that Razar Technologies can help you with, you?re still left with many important papers that must be delivered in hand to have the proper impact. The tactile weight of a document in hand when appropriate, not to mention the ability to easily add notes and distribute it on short notice, can sometimes make all the difference.
The cost of printing is going up 20 - 40% per year. Why? Printers are more available and the printer to employee ratio has gone down. There are more graphic intensive applications that require a greater amount of toner or ink and printing content off the Internet, which typically includes a lot of graphics, accounts for an estimated 20% of all office printing. Currently, there is no real insight into ?print spend?. Most organizations have a budget line item that simply gets paid, with a percent increase every year without consideration of how to drive that cost down along with the cost of wasted paper.
That?s where our Print Optimization solution comes in. With no sacrifice in the required quality, our patent-pending software can reduce toner and ink usage by up to 50 percent. It?s not magic, just smart engineering. Documents that require the highest degree of presentation quality see savings of 20 to 30 percent with no degradation, while more flexible print rules for other documents can allow maximum savings in the 30 to 50 percent range.
And it?s more than just ink. By giving administrators access to detailed reports on which departments and users utilize the biggest share of resources, they can use Razar?s tools to set appropriate policies. Users and groups of users can be restricted based on the use of applications, color, quotas and images, and documents can be printed double-sided or two-to-one page by default.
This two-tiered approach, making your hardware more efficient and giving you more control, has the best results for your bottom line and the environment. And the green effect? While you can save up to 50 percent on your consumable budget, 3-5 liters of oil and .01 square ton of CO2 is saved for every toner cartridge you don?t have to buy.

Traveling? Your iPhone May Be All You Need
Posted on June 28, 2009
Traveling nationwide for business and making all the flight, hotel and other arrangements myself, I needed help organizing my weekly schedule. I recently read a review explaining the travel apps that the Apple App Store offered, so I decided to check them out. I was pleasantly surprised to see over twenty different travel apps that could assist me with all my travel plans including where to eat, sleep, and even communicate in another language if I needed to.
Airplane travel can be a challenge even when the weather is not an issue, but as iPhone app reviews mentioned the TravelTracker app gives me one touch access to the status of all my flights. All I have to do is enter my itinerary and this travel app does the rest. TravelTracker adds times and dates for each flight, creates a packing list, helps me organize it and tracks my travel expenses. Weather information and delays are posted, and other options are suggested.
The Maps app keeps addresses for hotels, stores and restaurants that I frequent, as well as listing local points of interest. It gives me a satellite view of any area just by tapping a location on my iPhone. There is a GPS system available to take me step by step to any destination in any city I visit.
When my business takes me out of the country two important travel apps to have are: the Currency app and the Lonely Planet Mobile Phrasebooks. The Currency app gives me the exchange rate for the dollar in over ninety different currencies. I can convert a dollar into lire, pounds, or yen just by tapping the screen. This currency app allows me to keep track of how much I am spending in dollars, which can get confusing especially when I?m traveling to more than one country on a specific trip. The Lonely Planet Mobile Phrasebooks on the other hand, gives me the ability to translate words and phrases from English to another language. I am able to say hello in French, Spanish, and German or Japanese easily just by tapping. There are over 350,000 translations and it also has a multi-language slang dictionary.
Usually I entertain when I travel and that?s where the LocalEats app plays an important role. This app touches upon restaurants in almost all of the cities I visit. It lists their location and how to contact them. Another great app to use for entertaining is the Zagat To Go ?09 which gives the names, location and Zagat rating for the top restaurants in most cities. It explains the menu and the type of cuisine they serve. This app also lists the wine selections by vineyard and comments about each restaurant?s service, ambiance and price category. Another app that helps me keep track of my expenses is the Tipulator which actually figures the appropriate service tip in any part of the world. This app saves me time and money especially when I am out of the country.
My business trips have gotten easier thanks to advent of iPhone apps. They introduced me to a new world of travel applications which have saved me both time and money. iPhone travel apps have certainly made it easier to go from point A to point B in a more relaxed state of mind and I appreciate and thank the developers for that.

Speed Dial Round Up: 5 Different Dial Phone Apps for the IPhone
Posted on June 28, 2009
The iPhone came on the market without a speed dial function. Since the introduction of the iPhone, other companies have being working on applications that will enable iPhone users to be able to make a call by just touching the screen one time and making a connection. That time has finally arrived. There are several decent apps designed to enhance your ability to quickly dial on your iPhone. Here are just a few of them and they are available in the Apple App store. As the technology continues to improve more and more apps will be coming on the market and each one will bring something special to the iPhone experience. Everyday is a new one in the world of computers and smart phones, and every new app makes using them faster, easier and more exciting.
As noted by various iPhone app reviews, Big Boss Source is one of those choices. Big Boss will let you touch a contact and immediately the speed dial function activates. All you have to do is tap a person?s name, there?s no need to enter a telephone number. It also gives you a contact/address book, so you don?t need one on your home screen just for contacts. It works and it saves time.
Another choice of iPhone app reviews is from the German start-up company Hot Chili Apps. This app allows you to create personal iPhone buttons. Using your fingers to tap with you can design a personal address book by using symbols or photos or text. What this app does is enables you to communicate with just one finger whether it is a call, email or text.
Picture Dial is another recommended app from different iPhone app reviews. When you use this app all you need to do is tap on your contacts picture to call them. It?s fast and easy. Developed by Makayama.com it takes most of thinking out of making a call. Using the iPhone keeps getting simpler by the app.
Speed Dial is another app that offers you the luxury of speeding dialing by using your contact list and just by tapping a photo. It?s especially convenient to associate a photo with a number, that way you will never forget which face goes with which business card.
There is a brand new app being reviewed by Apple and being tested by 50 users that should be on the market soon. It is called Visual Dial and it will allow you to dial a contact directly from your home screen. This app is designed to connect a number with a photo and then a shortcut is created on your home screen. You then can tap it and it automatically dials the number. When all the testing is completed it will be available in the Apple App store.
There are always new apps coming on the market to improve the iPhone and make it even easier to use. Every new product goes through growing pains but once all the glitches are addressed and corrected the product gets stronger and stronger. The iPhone is a great product and it is opening new windows of opportunity everyday.

Fake Call Apps Round-Up
Posted on June 28, 2009
The Apple App store offers several fake call apps for iPhone use and the list is growing. Everyone, at one time or another gets caught in a situation that they want to get out of quickly. Only the problem is that they lack any form of an exit strategy. With fake call apps you can get out of almost any uncomfortable situation without creating one lie after another to achieve it. After all, a fake call app is not really a lie; you are calling yourself and pretending to be someone else. Okay maybe it?s a little white lie, but hey it works.
By reading iPhone app reviews, you can decide which fake call app works best for you. Here are some of them:
Fake Calls gives you a choice of name and type of number such as mobile or home and offers one ringtone. You can pre-time the call and it?s easy to use. There are not a lot of frills, but you can choose what wallpaper you want to display when you receive the fake call.
Another interesting twist on the fake call app is called Escape Pod. Instead of creating a fake call, it generates sounds that you can initiate while you are on the phone like a baby crying, or a siren noise from a fire truck or ambulance. Escape Pod does not get you out of face-to-face meetings, but it does help you end unpleasant or unwanted phone calls in a very innovative way.
Another interesting twist to the fake call app has been created by AlibiSMS and it offers customized fake text messages which are easy to use. iPhone app reviews notes the app will work if you want to use a SMS text message as the vehicle to get you out of a tight situation or conversation. This is the only service that AlibiSMS offers.
Another app that iPhone app reviews mentions is exitstrategy which is a great tool to generate fake calls. With exitstrategy you can set up a fake call, or receive a phony SMS text. They also offer a panic button, plus another timed call is generated one minute later. How convincing right? If you get a real call before the timer call, then the timer call is canceled, but the other three options should do the trick even without the timer call at all.
Another great fake call app is HottrixPhone Pro. iPhone app reviews says this app gives you the option to receive a number of timed calls using a playlist. Instead of just one call or a text message, there can be more than one, so you have several reasons to end a meeting or a phone call. HottrixPhone Pro adds credibility to the call by using actual ringtones. It also provides a voice on the other end of the fake call, making this combination very believable. By calling yourself more than once you show the urgency of ending your present situation, because a more pressing engagement is calling.
One more worth mentioning here is GottaDash which is focused on getting you out of business meetings. There are several different ringtones and the time of the rings can vary. As one iPhone app review explains, the ringtone idea is good but some other support is needed to back-up the created scenario.
Whatever fake call app you choose, it is a lesson in choices.
